Marathon des Sables

Sahara, 250km

\ Ultra Endurance Athlete

In 2015 Georgios run the ultra-marathon running race Marathon des Sables in the Sahara.

The Marathon des Sables is dubbed by the Discovery Channel as one of the toughest foot races on earth.

Georgios' decision to prepare for and undertake a challenge in a completely new sporting discipline and in an entirely different environment, was a synthesis of sport and adventure with medicine and research, all of which required 3 years to successfully come to its fruition.

The Marathon des Sables takes place in the Moroccan desert, widely known as Sahara. It is a 7-day, 250km multi-stage and self-sustained race where the participants have to carry all their equipment and food from the start to the end of the race.

The race route passes through vast lands covered in sand, barren and rocky terrains, hills and sand dunes.

The participants must face extreme conditions, including very high temperatures and heat waves during the day followed by low temperatures at night, sand storms, and must protect themselves from severe dehydration, skin damaging sun burns, heat stroke, musculoskeletal injuries, foot blisters and infections, and even toe nail trauma or complete loss of them.

Human physiology research in the Sahara.

An extensive series of scientific data were collected that focused on the human ability to perform under the environmental conditions of the Sahara; the resulting scientific work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented in international conferences. For more information on the results of the research findings, contact Georgios directly.
